Tata’s Rs 1 Lakh Car unveiled In Delhi Auto Expo 2008
In the presence of Mr. Ratan N. Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors, the company today rolled out the one millionth passenger car off the Indica platform at its Car Plant in Pune, in its ninth year since the commencement of production in January, 1999. While it achieved the 100,000th car in March 2001, and the 500,000th car in February, 2005, the progression from the 900,000th car to the millionth car was achieved in just 7 months.
The much talked about 1 lakh car being launched by Tata Motors will be showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2008. So you can expect a lot of crowd around the Tata Motors stall this year at the Auto Expo. The car is said to resemble the small car Matiz, by Daewoo Motors. It will be a four seater car with a rear engine. The 1-lakh car, as it is called now, will be launched in 2008 and in the next four years, Tata expects to produce at least one million units.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tata said, “I am very pleased that the company has rolled out the one millionth car off the Indica platform – something that was considered inconceivable by the project’s critics during the investment and the initial gestation period. The team of people involved with the journey to this milestone should feel satisfied today of having created a robust car business for the company.”
The first public presentation of the low-cost car will be made at an Auto Expo, in keeping with the company’s tradition of presenting a new model at an auto expo.
The low-cost car that has caught the imagination of virtually the entire country, has also been the subject of much speculation in the auto industry, with competitors periodically casting doubts over its feasibility.
